LONG DISTANCE MOVING WITHIN CANADA - REGINA

Regina - Community Overview

Regina was founded in 1882 and was named in honour of Queen Victoria. In 1883, Regina was declared the capital city of Saskatchewan.

When Saskatchewan was formed in 1905, Regina was named the provincial capital and the area exploded to 30,000 residents by 1911. Even with the destruction caused by a tornado in 1912, the economic depression of 1913 and the outbreak of World War I, the city continued to grow. During the war, conditions remained unsettled but, in the mid-1920s prosperity returned, and the population grew from 34,400 to 53,200 in a decade.

There’s no denying it; Regina is a prairie city. Regina sits like a regal oasis in the midst of a massive sea of wheat - the prairie grain belt. The tabletop prairie, almost without trees, affords travellers an impressive view of Regina from as far as 20 or 30 km away, with the more than 350,000 hand-planted trees.

Regina’s location, in the heart of Canada's “breadbasket”, means its fortunes are inexorably tied to the fortunes of the farming community. Regina is a cosmopolitan centre of business, education and industry, the seat of the provincial legislature.

The city is home to the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. Regina is also known nationwide as the home of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, maintaining the only training centre in the country for the force.

The City of Regina is located along the Trans-Canada Highway, with Highways #11 and #33 also leading into the city. Regina is midway between the Rockies and the Great Lakes, in the heart of the Canadian Prairies.

The population of Regina numbers approximately 228,928.
